Biography
Robert Lister joined IMAX Corporation in May 1999 and currently serves at the Company’s Chief Business Development and Chief Legal Officer.
Lister has led IMAX through several strategic projects related to new business lines, including its recent foray into location-based virtual reality, which incorporates technology partnerships with Google, Acer, HTC, and Starbreeze; the launch of a $50 million VR content fund with strategic investors including WPP, CAA and China Media Capital; as well as premium VR content agreements with leading developers Ubisoft and Skydance.
Lister also oversaw a joint venture with one of the largest Chinese technology manufacturers, TCL, on the launch of IMAX Private Theatre, a new premium home theatre offering. In 2016, Lister’s Business Development team helped launch two film funds, an Original Content Fund and a China Film Fund, through which IMAX and its partners will finance local-language Mandarin blockbuster films.
Under Lister’s leadership, IMAX’s legal team has overseen the negotiation of thousands of theatre and content deals, numerous major capital markets transactions and, most recently, the successful initial public offering of IMAX’s China subsidiary, IMAX China Holding, on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2015.
Lister was included in The Hollywood Reporter’s Annual Power Lawyers List and Variety’s Legal Impact list in 2016.
Prior to joining the Company, Lister was Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Clearview Cinemas, a film exhibitor, from March 1998 until his employment with IMAX. Prior to that, Lister served as Associate General Counsel of Merit Behavioral Care Corporation, a behavioral healthcare company, from 1996 to 1998. Lister is the chairman of the board of directors of TCL-IMAX Entertainment Co., Ltd., a joint venture of TCL Corporation and IMAX, and is a member of the board of directors of IMAX China Holding, Inc., a subsidiary of IMAX Corporation. Lister is a member of the New York State Bar Association.
